Samsung Surround Display Concept 2021

When I first heard about a “surround display phone” from Samsung I was pretty suspicious about it. But then the renders from Snoreyn and Letsgodigital actually convinced me this could work. Samsung hasn’t been innovation in the design department as much and fans can feel it. They need something new, an icebreaker, beyond the foldables. And here it is:

It all starts with a patent that envisions a surround screen smartphone. It was published on October 29th 202 and included in the database of the World Intellectual Property Office. The documents include 70 pages of detailed descriptions about a device that features multiple screens and a sliding part. There’s also a very curved screen upfront and a flat screen on the back. The sides hold their own mini semi curved screens. Both LCDs and AMOLEDs are mentioned.

While you may imagine a multi faceted device like a diamond, the surface is pretty flush an sleek. The content just flows from one screen to the other. A wraparound display is also an option. The design was rendered in 3D by inspired Italian designer Giuseppe Spinelli, aka Snoreyn. The case is made from a translucent material and there’s also a mention of an acrylic material or transparent polymer. A sliding transparent case sure sounds like something else compared to current phones.

Codenamed “Cameleon”, the device can adapt to its surroundings thanks to transparency. When it rains you can see water droplets flowing across its surface for example. It can also scan the area and pick up the environment’s colors. The sliding parts holds the cameras and the speaker. The sliding part reveals the main camera and the selfie one is under the screen. The experience is fully wireless and hands free: no buttons, ports or holes are present here.
