iPhone 12 Gets That Wraparound Screen 2020

The iPhone 12 has been called many things, but none of them was a “wraparound screen phone”. That concept has been thrown around before, putting a screen on the entirety of a device’s body, on the front, back and sides. Now it’s back in the form of an iPhone 12 rendered by Ran Avni and Alexander Burakov.

Actually we’re no strangers to such devices, since the Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha (which was just delayed by the way) also offered a wraparound screen. It ditched buttons and only let a small slab at the back for the cameras and other components. Aside from being all screen, the new iPhones come with a 360 degree transparent screen technology. There’s also a brand new CPU, the Apple A14 and “all day battery life”.

I love how the video of the device below shows two versions of the iPhone 12 and highlights the use of an earpiece and music speakers. Somehow I feel that those would be more discrete in such a concept. The screen is called an “8K Retina” panel here and while we do see a ton of the front and sides, the back side is shown too little. I see that the two back cameras have been placed at the top, easily mistaken for a dual selfie camera.

The frame of the phone sticks out a bit and the whole device is all curves. The only thing stopping this phone from being an entire slab of glass is the top and bottom white piece, probably made of metal. I feel that this would make a fine concept back in the days of the Galaxy S6, but that paradigm has now sailed to new shores, as people have come to expect different things from phones: big batteries, foldable parts, 5G and large diagonals.

Still, I have a feeling this is not the last we’ll hear about a wraparound screen. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: fragility, fragility, fragility! That’s why it’ll never get made.
