Huawei foldable smartphone prototype

Huawei has released information about its future smartphone models over time. In October 2017, Richard Yu, the CEO of Huawei's Consumer Business Group, reported for the first time that Huawei has a folding phone in development.
In addition, the company already had a working prototype of a two-screen device, Richard Yu added. There was only a small gap between them that needed to be fixed.

Soon there were rumors that Huawei fearsome rival Samsung wanted to stand out and be the first to present a foldable device. Ironically, we now know that after a period of years of development, there will not be a week between the introduction of one and the other model.

Richard Yu himself has indicated that Huawei will present her 5G folding smartphone at MWC 2019. This statement was made last week at the end of the presentation of the Balong 5000 chipset, Huawei's first commercial 5G router. The foldable smartphone will also be equipped with the new Balon-5000. This is the counterpart of the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem.

Huawei Mate foldable smartphone

As far as the naming of Huawei's foldable smartphone is concerned, there are still several options open. At the end of last year Huawei submitted a series of trademark applications for the model names Mate Flex, Mate Flexi, Mate Fold and Mate F. Although it is still unclear what the exact name will be, it is clear that Huawei intends to use its foldable smartphone within the high-end Mate series.

In terms of specifications, there is still remarkably little known about the foldable Huawei smartphone. The company develops its own processors, of which the Kirin 980 with a double Neural Processing Unit (NPU) is the latest. This processor was presented in the last quarter of 2018. The Kirin 980 was first used in the Mate 20 series, probably this chipset can also be found in the folding phone from Huawei. Incidentally, it will not only be the processor that corresponds, chances are that there are more similarities with the Mate 20 Pro.

It is as yet unknown whether the device is also equipped with the M-Pen, as is the case with the Mate 20 X gaming smartphone. Incidentally, it will certainly be possible to also play a game on the foldable Huawei smartphone. Speaking of gaming, Samsung recently patented an interesting foldable gaming smartphone with a built-in D-pad.

It seems most likely that the foldable smartphone model of Huawei opens up to a tablet format, just like Samsung is the case. It will not be a clamshell design, as Motorola will most likely present at MWC 2019.

Then the question is whether the screen will fold inwards or outwards. There are rumors that Huawei will choose a larger display than Samsung. It is possible that the total device is slightly larger, but it is also possible that the display is on the outside. This allows a larger display surface to be created without increasing the size when you have folded the device.

This method is also technically easier to realize and will also be cheaper, after all you do not have to place an extra screen on the outside. Also the patents that LetsGoDigital encountered from Huawei foldable smartphones. Huawei has also applied for significantly fewer patents in recent years for foldable smartphones than Samsung.

As far as the price of Huawei's first folding smartphone is concerned, we are still in the dark. Meanwhile it is known that the Samsung Galaxy Fold should cost around € 1,600 (128GB). Chances are that Huawei wants to stay here, a price of € 1.449 sounds a bit more reasonable, is not it?

Huawei has scheduled a press conference on Sunday 24 February at 14:00 Dutch time. At this moment the 5G foldable smartphone will be presented. The company may also simultaneously release a new MateBook notebook and MediaPad tablet. The Mobile World Congress starts a day later. Naturally, the revolutionary device will also be on display at MWC 2019.

Other manufacturers who will probably also introduce a foldable phone during MWC are Samsung, Motorola and Xiaomi. LG will probably only show its folding device to a limited company. And also Oppo will use the Mobile World Congress to release more information about its foldable smartphone. View our full foldable smartphone overview here.
